For Fairholz, I photographed a loft penthouse – natural wood floors beneath an open timber roof structure.
Floor photography always raises the same question: how do you show a surface you are standing on? Too flat, and you only see stripes. Too steep, and the space is lost. That's why I mostly photographed so that the floorboards run into the depth and the eye follows them – across the dining area, to the steel staircase, up to the gallery.
The roof structure helps: the exposed beams above and the floorboards below are made of the same material and frame the space from two sides.
Photographed in daylight – wood needs soft light, otherwise the grain becomes harsh.
