For Esterhazy Betriebe, I photographed the Roman quarry of St. Margarethen in Burgenland – an open-air stage and grandstand in a quarry with Roman roots.
Here, scale is the real challenge. The rock faces are so large that every shot makes them look smaller than they really are. That's why reference points were needed: the central aisle of the grandstand, the rows of seats, the wooden walkway of the visitor access. Only through these elements does the eye recognise how high the quarry actually is.
The barrier-free access is also part of the series – a structure that holds back and yet opens up the entire site.
