For Reitinger Ofenbau, I photographed fireplaces in their surroundings – built into modern living spaces, not isolated in the studio.
Photographically, a fireplace is a special case: it is both an object and a light source. When the fire is burning, it outshines everything else; when it isn't, the fireplace is just a dark opening in the wall. The usable moment lies in between – when the fire is visible and the room still retains its detail.
That's why the focus is on dusk and night. In the night shot of the villa with its illuminated wooden terrace, the fire is just a warm point in the house – but the point the eye goes to first.
