For architect Norbert Haderer, I photographed the secondary school in Perg, Upper Austria – existing building and extension.
Outside, striking concrete columns and a cantilevered volume define the entrance; from the schoolyard, you can see how the new wing relates to the main building.
Inside, I was primarily concerned with light. The stairwell thrives on the play of shadows that moves throughout the day, the curved staircase with its round ceiling lights guides the eye, and the assembly hall manages almost entirely without artificial light.
Schools are rewarding subjects for photography: generous, clearly organised and designed so that many people can find their way around at the same time.
